Why minimize environmental impact?

WATER – A RECIPE STRAIGHT FROM NATURE

Only nature knows the unique and unrepeatable recipe for San Benedetto mineral water. Our water rises from a depth of 300 metres below the surface of the earth, full of life and goodness. Our most precious resource is the work of nature: to protect it, we must protect nature.

Light, balanced and pure – like the springs it comes from. In our awareness of the exceptional qualities of our water, we’ve always sought to preserve its properties intact and reduce its environmental impact. Only in this way can we pass on its precious qualities to today’s and tomorrow’s generations.

PAYING NATURE BACK

We introduced PET packaging in the 1980s, and since then we’ve embraced an energy saving philosophy that involves reducing CO2 emissions at every point in the production chain, with annual reductions in the quantity of plastic used for bottling. Our objective is to become an example to follow for the mineral waters sector.

LESS PLASTIC, MORE RECYCLING

The great results recorded in the environmental field have been achieved through the use of an even smaller “smart” cap which uses less plastic, and through the reduction of plastic used in packaging. We have recorded a reduction in PET on bottles of the Ecogreen Project line of 0.5 l, 1 l, 1.5 l and 2 l bottles by 8%, 19%, 18% and 10% respectively. And for these sizes, we are using percentages of rPET (regenerated plastic) of 10% on 0.5 l, 50% on one litre Easy and 30% on the 1.5 and 2 l family sizes. Great results, which we do not consider an end result, but another step along our journey of ongoing improvement.

THE ECOGREEN PROJECT: IMPROVING THE ENVIRONMENT TOGETHER

In 2011 we decided to invest in a major programme, the Ecogreen Project, designed to protect the environment. We can now measure our commitment in a concrete way, from greater efficiency in production processes to the reduction of plastic used, from the use of rPET on family sizes, 1 l Easy and 0.5 l. We feel proud of these actions, and are sure they add value to our company. Also, for the whole Ecogreen project line, we compensate for emissions by financing greenhouse gas reduction projects.

RESULTS 2013-2016

The results of our commitment can be clearly seen: over the period 2013-2016, we reduced CO2eq emissions by 7% on the San Benedetto Mineral Water line bottled at our Scorzè site (data on a litre basis). We have thus confirmed our path of Sustainable Innovation, which allows us to make the principles of sustainability the very driving force behind our business.

CLEAN ENERGY FOR PURE WATER

Another goal reached is the use of the trigeneration plant at the Scorzè unit, where the plant will reduce energy costs by 20% each year, and reduce CO2eq. emissions estimated at about 17,300 tonnes*. Currently, the plant meets 80% of the unit’s energy needs. Plus, photovoltaic panels were installed at the Viggianello and Popoli units.

CLAIMS BACKED UP BY CONCRETE AGREEMENTS

Since 2009, San Benedetto has signed several voluntary collaboration agreements with Italy’s Ministry for Environment Protection (land and waters), qualifying itself as the first company in the sector to promote a carbon footprint mapping process in Italy. To this we added the agreement signed in 2016 whereby we took on commitments in several areas: firstly, by contributing to the European Commission’s pilot initiative aimed at developing guidelines for the assessment of the environmental impacts of products (Product Environmental Footprint) in the bottled mineral water sector; secondly, by promoting, through the means of communication provided by the National Programme for the Assessment of Environmental Footprint, the improvement of the environmental performance of mineral water products.
