Why minimize environmental impact?

WATER – A RECIPE STRAIGHT FROM NATURE

Only nature knows the unique and unrepeatable recipe for San Benedetto mineral water. Our water rises from a depth of 300 metres below the surface of the earth, full of life and goodness. Our most precious resource is the work of nature: to protect it, we must protect nature.

Light, balanced and pure – like the springs it comes from. In our awareness of the exceptional qualities of our water, we’ve always sought to preserve its properties intact and reduce its environmental impact. Only in this way can we pass on its precious qualities to today’s and tomorrow’s generations.

PAYING NATURE BACK

We introduced PET packaging in the 1980s, and since then we’ve embraced an energy saving philosophy that involves reducing CO2 emissions at every point in the production chain, with annual reductions in the quantity of plastic used for bottling. Our objective is to become an example to follow for the mineral waters sector.

Less plastic, more recycling

We’ve achieved some impressive results in the environmental sphere thanks to our use of “smart” caps – smaller and with less plastic – and a reduction in the amount of plastic used in packaging. We’ve reduced the amount of PET we use in our bottles (by 13%, 16% and 7.4% for 1.5 l, 1 l and 2 l bottles respectively), and recycle between 30 and 50% of the plastic used in the packaging of these bottles. Impressive results – but they’re just the beginning.

Progetto Ecogreen: improving the environment together

In 2011 we launched our Ecogreen project, a major initiative for the protection of the environment. The results we’ve achieved so far range from greater efficiency in production processes to reductions in the amount of plastic used, the introduction of RPET in our family and 1-litre Easy formats, and the New Life for PET initiative, where plastic bottles can be returned to the point of sale for recycling. These actions make us proud – and they make our company even bigger.

Results 2013/14

The results of our commitments are there for all to see: in 2014 we reduced the CO2 emissions of our San Benedetto mineral water range by 4.7% compared with the previous year. That’s confirmation of the success of our Sustainable Innovation initiative, which makes the principles of sustainability the drivers of our actions as a company.

CLEAN POWER FOR PURE WATER

The trigeneration facilities we’ve installed in our bottling plants of Scorzè and Viggianello are a strategic choice in terms of sustainability: in Scorzè, the new power production facility has cut the plant’s annual energy costs by 15% and reduced CO2 emissions by around 17,300 tonnes. In Viggianello, our trigeneration unit has dramatically reduced CO2 emissions by an estimated 22.4%. Trigeneration currently meets 80% of the plant’s energy requirements.

WE PUT OUR SIGNATURE TO OUR COMMITMENTS

Since 2009, San Benedetto has signed a series of voluntary cooperation packages with the Italian Ministry of the Environment under which it became the first company in the Italian food and beverages sector to implement a carbon footprint monitoring system. And in a recent (2016) agreement, our company pledged its commitment to various environmental issues. This agreement primarily addresses the creation of guidelines for the Product Environmental Footprint for the bottled mineral water sector; it also seeks to improve the environmental performance of mineral waters and soft drinks via the ‘National Programme for Environmental Footprint Evaluation’.
