Why minimize environmental impact?

WATER – A RECIPE STRAIGHT FROM NATURE

Only nature knows the unique and unrepeatable recipe for San Benedetto mineral water. Our water rises from a depth of 300 metres below the surface of the earth, full of life and goodness. Our most precious resource is the work of nature: to protect it, we must protect nature.

Light, balanced and pure – like the springs it comes from. In our awareness of the exceptional qualities of our water, we’ve always sought to preserve its properties intact and reduce its environmental impact. Only in this way can we pass on its precious qualities to today’s and tomorrow’s generations.

PAYING NATURE BACK

We introduced PET packaging in the 1980s, and since then we’ve embraced an energy saving philosophy that involves reducing CO2 emissions at every point in the production chain, with annual reductions in the quantity of plastic used for bottling. Our objective is to become an example to follow for the mineral waters sector.

More recycling, less plastic

The great results achieved in environmental terms have been through the use of “smart”, even smaller, tops that use less plastic, and the reduction in the use of plastic in the packaging. Between 2013 and 2017 we have obtained a reduction in bottle weight in the Ecogreen project for 0.5L, 1 L, 1.5 L, and 2 L bottles respectively to the extent of 8%, 19%, 18% and 10% and, also in the same formats, using a percentage of rPET (regenerated plastic) of 10% for the 0.5 L bottle, 50% for the one litre Easy and 30% on the family formats of 1.5 e 2 Litre bottles. These represent great strides forward, but we are not resting on our laurels, with our aim being to constantly improve further on these figures.

Ecogreen: together for the environment

In 2011 we decided to invest in a major programme, the Ecogreen Project, designed to protect the environment. We can now measure our commitment in a concrete way, from greater efficiency in production processes to the reduction of plastic used, from the use of rPET on family sizes, 1 l Easy and 0.5 l. We feel proud of these actions, and are sure they add value to our company. Also, for the whole Ecogreen line, we compensate for emissions by financing greenhouse gas reduction projects.

Results

The results of our commitment are there for all to see. From 2016 to 2017 we reduced CO2 eq emissions by 4.3%* in the Acqua San Benedetto Italia water bottle line at the works in Scorzè, Popoli, Viggianello, Donato and Atella (data on litre basis). We thus confirmed our ongoing innovation in the sustainable innovation area, where the principles of sustainability continue to be a major driving force behind all the actions and endeavours of our business.

RESULTS 2013/2017

-20,3%
ON THE ECOGREEN BOTTLING PROJECT AT THE WORKS IN VIGGIANELLO AND POPOLI (DATA ON LITRE BASIS)**
-24%
ON THE EASY BOTTLING PROJECT AT THE SCORZE’ AND VIGGIANELLO WORKS (DATA ON LITRE BASIS)**

CLEAN ENERGY FOR PURE WATER

Another goal reached is the use of the trigeneration plant at the Scorzè unit, where the plant will reduce energy costs by 20% each year, and reduce CO2eq. emissions estimated at about 17,300 tonnes*. Currently, the plant meets 80% of the unit’s energy needs. Plus, photovoltaic panels were installed at the Viggianello and Popoli units.
*Estimate from plant start-up.

WE UNDERWRITE OUR COMMITMENT

On 13th February 2018 San Benedetto and the Ministry of the Environment and the Protection of the Land and Sea signed a new voluntary agreement for research and the promotion of joint sustainability initiatives , cooperating in continued action for the reduction of, and for the neutralising of, CO₂ eq emission, working out new models of Eco Design and Eco Efficiency, taking part in joint initiatives for raising awareness of, and developing, environmental sustainability in the production, distribution and sales of San Benedetto mineral water. The parties also promote the awareness campaigns in accordance with the guidelines set forth in the “National Programme for Environmental Footprint Evaluation” and cooperate on the drafting of Product Environmental Footprint guidelines in the “Packed Water” sector.
