North of Venice, among the radicchio fields, there was a spring where people stopped by to drink, called the ancient "water source of health", a true millenary spring.

From the glaciers of the Dolomites and the Alps, it makes a long journey underground and descends to a depth of hundreds of meters.

It crosses layers of limestone rocks and gets enriched with precious mineral salts, especially calcium and magnesium.

The water then goes up, traveling through the deep layers of the subsoil.

The ancient water source of health

The first glass bottle is produced in Scorzè, Venice, where in the same year, on 10 April, Mineral Water San Benedetto SpA was founded: Bruno and Ermenegildo Scattolin are the directors, Augusto Zoppas is the president. The water is named after its ancient 300 meter deep source : San Benedetto.

Entrepreneurial courage

Enrico Zoppas and Giuliano De Polo start their entrepreneurial adventure together: Enrico is CEO and then President in 2004, after the untimely death of De Polo. The history of San Benedetto his special. It is the only fully Italian-owned company. And that is thanks to the courageous choices that knew how to take advantage of the Italian quality.

The culture of innovation

Up until 70s the company used glass bottles only. In 1984 San Benedetto was the first company in Italy to launch PET bottles of different formats (1.5, half liter, 1L and 2L). Vertical process integration enables in-house bottle production.

The first in Italy to create a high-performance sterile bottling plant for the production of non-carbonated soft drinks, San Benedetto uses this competitive advantage to position itself among the innovation leaders on the market, in line with emerging consumption trends and use of advertising techniques.

The era of "Push & Pull"

San Benedetto patents the first totally sterile and resealable "Push & Pull" closure, meeting the demands of an even more dynamic market which embraces "on the go" as an integral part of our daily life.

"Easy" joins the market

Easy is the first compact 1 L mineral water bottle on the market. It meets the increased water consumption away from home

The international vision

The company begins to expand into foreign markets, and signs franchise agreements first with Cadbury Schweppes International (1984) and later with Pepsi Co. International (1988) to produce and market a range of products in Italy under Pepsi, Seven Up and Schweppes trademarks.

A new company is launched in Spain, in Valencia to produce mineral water and beverages under the Fuente Primavera trademark. Next comes a stake in a Dominican Republic company, Santa Clara CPA.

In collaboration with Danone, San Benedetto incorporates Polska Woda in Poland and Magyarviz Kft in Hungary. In 2010, the San Benedetto Group acquires the stake in Danone and becomes the sole shareholder of both companies.

San Benedetto signs a subcontract with ABL for the production and packaging of Coca Cola beverages for the European market.

New water, new sources

A new plant is opened in Popoli, Pescara, where Guizza Fonte Valle Reale mineral water is bottled. In 1997 the Donato plant in Biella opens its facilities, where Alpe Guizza SpA will produce its mineral water Guizza Fonte Caudana.

Fonte Primavera di Popoli and Acqua di Nepi

Mineral water Fonte Primavera is bottled in the Popoli plant, In 2001, the Group acquires 100% of Acqua di Nepi SpA (Viterbo) expanding its product portfolio with naturally sparkling waters.

Closer to you

San Benedetto water is closer to the consumers. The Viggianello (Potenza) plant is inaugurated. Fonte del Pollino water from the precious source in the heart of the Pollino National Park is bottled here. In the same year, Cutolo Rionero in Vulture S.r.l. source, the historic Lucanian natural sparkling water source, is acquired.

Pocenia (UD)

The San Benedetto Group expands its coverage on the national territory with the acquisition of Acqua Paradiso, a plant closed in 2017, whose new name becomes Pocenia SRL. It includes four bottling plants, one of which is aseptic, with a total hourly capacity of about 90,000 bottles, capable of packaging a variety of glass and PET formats. Acqua Paradiso is a pure trace mineral rich in elements that make it healthy and beneficial for the body.

We have always been committed to direct communication to the consumer aimed at expressing corporate principles and values. We are promoters of new ways of drinking, inherent not only in the product, but also in the corporate vision. We plan our communication in both classic and digital media by identifying testimonials of excellence who can best express our values: from the first campaigns with Sylva Koscina to Cindy Crawford. From 2020 together with Elisabetta Canalis and Vittorio Brumotti for Ecogreen.

The commitment to innovation and optimization is strengthened by environmental protection, which required to rethink the entire process in terms of eco-sustainability. The first milestone was reached in 2009. The company signed an agreement with the Ministry of the Environment, renewed in 2016, 2018 and 2021.

The Ecogreen project

A range of innovative bottles for those who love nature and respect the environment. These bottles are made from regenerated plastic using a 100% CO2e emissions offset process.

More sustainable

Energy savings of 15% per year and a CO2 reduction of approximately 17,300 tons each year: these are the results achieved thanks to the new 13.2 MW electricity, heating and cooling trigeneration plant aimed to optimize consumption. Designed and built by E.ON Connecting Energies, it is another important step of San Benedetto towards environment protection.

A sustainability project in collaboration with Treedom: a green lung consisting of 6,000 trees in Scorzé (Venice) planted by all who want to contribute, promote personal and environmental well-being and give back room to the planet. A project that actually commits to the environmental protection.

The Twist & Drink cap and the new Click Cap are solutions that anticipate the European directive 2019/904, requiring the cap attached to the bottle by 2024.

Ecogreen 100 ECO

The new 100 ECO bottle is made with 100% recycled plastic and is 100% carbon neutral: CO2eq emissions are offset through the purchase of credits to finance environmental protection projects.

From the beginning of our history we have invested in innovation and research in different areas.
We have created a network of sources to bring the production closer to consumers to reduce the negative shipment impacts; we have made technological and scientific investments, through internal laboratories with state-of-the-art instrumentation and  specialized personnel assisted by universities.

Sustainable production

We have always been committed to policies efficiency and energy policies.
The principle of 4Rs.
The first R is rationalization, that is, new production processes, new materials and new more efficient and sustainable methods.
The second R is the reduction of our impacts, in particular through the reduction of the use of PET, of CO2 emissions.
The third R is recycling, through the use of regenerated plastic (RPET).
The fourth R is responsibility: offsetting and compliance with the laws and protection water sources and cycles.

New group policy

We want to improve and consolidate the reliability, effectiveness and efficiency of our Group’s activities in terms of Environment, Safety, Energy, Food Safety and Carbon Footprint.
With the new Group policy we intend to express our values, our objectives and our long-term commitment in terms of Integrated Management System standards (ISO 14064-1: 2018, ISO 50001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 14067, IFS, ISO 22000 and BRCGS).
